About Technical Operations

BioMarin’s Technical Operations group is responsible for creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling production of those drugs for the commercial market. These engineers, technicians, scientists and support staff build and maintain BioMarin’s cutting-edge manufacturing processes and sites, provide quality assurance and quality control to ensure we meet regulatory standards, and procure the needed goods and services to support manufacturing and coordinating the worldwide movement of our drugs to patients.

Senior Manager, Utilities & Maintenance Operations

Shanbally, Ringaskiddy, Cork

Role Summary:

The Senior Manager, Utilities & Maintenance Operations reporting to the Senior Director, Engineering and EHS is responsible for the site utilities and maintenance operations programme at the BioMarin Shanbally facility.

The Senior Manager, Utilities & Maintenance Operations will be an integral member of the Shanbally Engineering Leadership Team.

The scope of this role will cover all Utility and Maintenance Operation activities on the site in support of Drug Substance Manufacturing, Drug Product, Packaging, Warehouse & Dispensing, QC and MSAT labs.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the Maintenance Team to execute all aspects of maintenance and calibrations across the site in a safe and compliant manner.
• Lead Utility Engineers to execute all aspects of Utilities operations across the site in a safe and compliant manner. Overall responsibility for the compliant operation of critical clean utilities.
• A broad knowledge of Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements with a demonstrated commitment to safety.
• Maintain a safe working environment by continuously promoting safety awareness, recognising and rectifying unsafe conditions and performing thorough investigations when accidents occur
• Responsible for executing the preventive and correct maintenance schedule provided by the maintenance planner/schedulers in line with equipment availability.
• Responsible for the planning and scheduling of all maintenance activities and calibrations.
• Ensure maintenance resources are in place available, trained and qualified to complete all aspects of maintenance on site.
• Engage with Asset Health program team members to highlight areas for improvement within the maintenance program.
• Ensure process and utilities equipment is maintained in a safe and compliant manner to maximise equipment uptime and increase equipment resiliency.
• Ensure all work is planned adequately so that all required elements are in place to successfully complete a task within scheduled timeframe.
• Promote continuous improvement of the site maintenance program throughout the maintenance team.
• Utilise Six Sigma tools such as root cause analysis methods to establish root causes to any issues that may arise and implement robust corrective measures.
• Raising, investigating and closing site quality records such as change requests, deviations, events and actions.
• Engage and develop the team of onsite maintenance technicians. Responsible for coaching and mentoring maintenance technicians.
• Control of maintenance shift pattern and required on call process to ensure adequate maintenance cover exists and is utilised in an efficient manner.
• Planning and execution of site utility shutdowns.
• Continue to promote a “Right First Time” philosophy in all areas of maintenance/reliability and utility operations activities.
• Key contributor to the site’s business continuity planning efforts
• Establish mechanisms to ensure site maintenance works are completed to agreed PM’s.
• Maintain documentation and management and control systems in compliance with cGMP regulations and training instructions.
• Leadership of the team by providing clear structure and organization of work as well as development opportunities for team members.
• Demonstrate personal leadership while managing talent selection, talent development, training, succession planning and performance management
• Develop and deliver strategies that will transform this area of the business and ensure readiness to meet rapid growth
• Set objectives for the team and ensure measurement system is in place to track performance vs plans.
• Further develop the team culture focusing on inclusivity and cross functional leadership of the business.
• Sound technical knowledge of design of biotech facilities including process, equipment, piping and other key design disciplines
• Works with the site Capital Projects group to support safe site execution.
• Responsible for implementing and coordinating development of team apprentices.
• Other duties as assigned.

Experience & Educations:

•  A minimum of 15 years’ experience in the bio-pharmaceutical industry with strong technical, management and/or maintenance experience
•  A relevant third level qualification in Science, Engineering or related discipline is preferred.
• A high level of initiative, energy, and motivation are key role requirements, as well as excellent leadership and organizational skills and effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
